Calculator (Fiction)
Written on 5th January 2026

26 years ago, I was given this calculator.

It was nothing special, but it was the same one my father used to write his exams. It was the same one which helped me through these 26 faithful years.

It was never perfect, the solar no longer works and the battery terminals were replaced more times than I can count. But it still works well.

It was always there, from my first entrance exam to the peak of my career, every moment lying beside me silently, always on.

But now, the time has come to pass on the legacy to him, my son.

"Son, you needed a calculator right? I have the perfect one for you..."

"Dad, this is probably as old as the Taj Mahal! How can I take it to school?"

He threw it onto the floor. The sound of plastic breaking filled the room as devastation filled my heart. As I picked up the broken pieces of it, I saw the screen fade as the memories and legacy of it flashed before me. It may be old, but it carried the weight and problems of 2 generations...

Now, where did everything go wrong, for it to be thrown on the ground after being faithful for so many years?

How did something that supported for so many years, experience such a brutal end?

How come I was so unfair to it?
